In Mount Davidson Manor, you will find the strong influence of one man, Fernando Nelson, who built many of San Francisco's communities in a career that spanned seven decades. In fact, Nelson and his sons are credited with building more than 4,000 homes in the city from 1876 to just after World War II. In Mount Davidson Manor you will find many Spanish Mediterranean-style single family homes, with red tiled roofs that add some color to the neighborhood even as summer's fogs blow in. There are also several newer condos and homes to choose from. Several of the winding streets boast beautiful, hilly views. Residents enjoy their proximity to Ocean Avenue's commercial strip, which offers all of the everyday conveniences. A Muni streetcar runs right down Ocean Avenue as well, for access to downtown or south to the Balboa Park BART station. At the southwest corner of the neighborhood, tucked behind Aptos Middle School, is a playground popular with area families. There are facilities for tennis, baseball, and a new jungle gym. Watch out depending on time of day -- you might find yourself in the middle of 7th grade P.E. all over again, and no one wants that.
One of San Francisco’s hidden gems, West Portal gets its name from the Muni Metro Station which runs through Twin Peaks Tunnel. Since the fog (known by locals as “Karl”) stops near the West Portal neighborhood, this is a great place to live if you enjoy bright blue skies. West Portal is filled with beautiful, traditional homes that are incredibly spacious. The Muni Station makes it easy for commuters to access the Financial District, Google, and the always-vibrant Union Square. Plus, Silicon Valley is easily accessible via the Highway 280, making West Portal a nice, central hub no matter where you work.
The Stern Grove Festival takes place every summer just outside of the southwest section of West Portal. Each Sunday from the beginning of June through mid-August, locals and tourists gather for a day of music, food, and fun. Even when the festival ends, there is still plenty to enjoy and explore at the Sigmund Grove Recreation Center including an off-leash dog park, several outdoor athletic courts and fields, a playground, and the Tracedro House, which is reservable for private events.
Enjoy the best of easy commuting and fun activities when you live in West Portal!
